You are under moral obligation to help accident victims. Give first aid and care you can. Get an ambulance as quickly as possible.
HERE IS WHAT TO SAY IN AN EMERGENCY CALL
Where? Describe exact location. For example, I am at Kahawa West round about Nairobi.
What happened? Give a short description of the accident. For example, a trailer has hit a motorcycle carrying two passengers at Kahawa West round about Nairobi
How many? Say how may injured there are. For example, the three people on the motorcycle have been injured and they are bleeding profusely.
What kind of injury? Indicate severity of injury. For example, on person is still and not moving while the other two have bruises on the head, hand and legs with a lot of bleeding coming from the head.
Wait for further questions! Do not hang up before everything has been understood.
HOW TO ACT AT THE SIDE OF ACCIDENT
- Clear the way for the ambulance
- Always safeguard site of accident and set up warning triangle.
- Assess situation and behave carefully and considerately.
HOW TO RESCUE PERSONS FROM A VEHICLE.
Speak to the injured person, undo seat belt and turn patients back towards you from the hips
Pass your arms under patient armpit and grasp one arm.
Drag patient from vehicle and place in safe position.
HOW TO REMOVE A CRASH HELMET
Open visor and speak to patient.
If unconscious two people should carefully remove helmet. Check breathing. If patient is breathing place in recovery position.
If patient does not react to loud speech it implies, he or she is unconscious.
No breathing heard. No chest movement implies the patient has respiratory failure.
No pulse on either side of neck implies the patient has circulatory failure.
UNCONSCIOUSNESS-RECOVERY POSITION
If patient is unconscious, test breathing. If breathing, place in a recovery position where:
- You place the arm under body
- Bend nearside leg turn patients’ shoulder and hip slowly on to side.
- Turn patients’ shoulder and hip slowly on to side.
- Tilt head back and open patient’s mouth. Place arm behind back.
- Cover patient and call ambulance
HOW TO PERFORM ARTIFICIAL RESPIRATION
In case of respiratory failure give artificial respiration as follows
- Recline head back
- Keep patients’ mouth or nose closed
- Breathe into mouth or nose
- Turn head to side and watch exhalation.
- Breathe into the patient 15 times minute.
HOW TO PERFORM CARDIO-PULMONARY RESUSCITATION
In case of circulatory failure to Heart /Lung resuscitation.
Continue resuscitation until a doctor arrives by artificial respiration and chest compression, Breathing /Chest compression rate of 2/15, pressure frequency at rate of 90-100 /min.
HOW TO STOP BLEEDINGS
In case of severe bleeding from the arm, lift the arm and apply pressure to artery in the upper arm
Apply two pressure bandages to bleeding area.
HOW TO HELP A CASUALTY IN SCHOCK
People suffering from Schock are pales cold and have a week pulse
Position the casualty in prone position with legs lifted.
Reassure him and keep him warm.
HOW TO POSITION A CASUALTY
In case of accident or illness to abdomen get the patient to lie flat on his back with knees bent for relaxation.
In case of breathing difficulties or heart attack raise patients head and chest if he is conscious
If patient is conscious, place patients head in raised position for example with concussion
In case of shock place patient in prone position with bent knees, if conscious.
